Steve Schwabe is picking up where he left off in
the Short Hills Amateur Golf tournament.
Schwabe, the Short Hills Am defending champion,
shot an opening-round 69 on Saturday, good enough for a one-stroke lead over
Kevin Kilstrom and Tim Flaherty.
There's more on the line for Schwabe, however,
than defending a title. He's hoping to finish in the top two of the season-long
points chase to earn a chance to golf in the July 4 4-spotter qualifying
tournament for the PGA Tour's John Deere Classic.
Saturday's round went a long way to making that happen, though the rest of
the top five in the points chase all are within seven shots of Schwabe, including Kilstrom, who
sits in third.
Schwabe has 980 points to Kilstrom's
860. The Short Hills Am title is worth 400 points.
Points runner-up Chris Wilkins had a opening-round
74, tied for 10th with Bruce Allison. No. 4 Dan Fisher shot a 72, putting him
three shots back in fifth place with Dustin Drenth,
Adam Seitz, JD Rios and Greg Rios.
Tom Miler, at No. 5, was the farthest back among the season point leaders,
with a 76.
In the Seniors Division, Tom Swanwick holds a one
stroke lead over Daniel Burke, shooting a first-round 73.
That chase, too, will provide an interesting final round today, also a
36-hole event. The rest of the top 10 is within four shots of Swanwick. Checking in just two shots back with 75s are
Steve Landauer, Carlos Salaber
and Preston Boyd.
